Good fishing tackle will last many seasons if it is well cared for.
Rods and reels should be thoroughly dried after a fishing session to prevent corrosion and mould. Rods should not be stored for any length of time in wet rod bags.
Some reels benefit from being oiled occasionally, and you should dismantle them to clean out any dirt or grit that has accumulated at least once a season.

Check rod rings frequently for wear, and replace any where the ring has broken or worn. Check the whippings too, and re-whip rings if they have become loose. Many good fish have been lost because these simple precautions have not been observed.
Floats are designed to be waterproof, but should be checked for cracks and splits in the varnish that could allow water to seep in. Varnish and paints for repairs are inexpensive and easily obtained from hardware stores and craft shops.
Keep hooks and other tackle items dry. It is surprising how much water can get into tackle boxes on a rainy day, so check when you get home, and if necessary allow everything to dry thoroughly before storing it away again.
Umbrellas should be dried thoroughly after use too, there is nothing worse than an umbrella that cannot be properly assembled due to corrosion as you will only find out there is a problem when you need protection from the next downpour on the bank!
