Shot
Shot is attached to the line to provide weight to partially sink a float, and can also be used to prevent a leger weight from sliding down the line.
In the past, pieces of lead shot that were manufactured for shotgun cartridges were split to allow them to be pinched on the line, hence the term ‘split shot’. Nowadays the use of lead except in the very smallest of sizes is illegal in the UK, so shot is now manufactured specifically for angling purposes using non-toxic alternatives to lead.
You will need shot in a range of sizes, but the sizes most commonly used are SSG, AAA, BBB, Number 1, Number 4, Number 6 and Number 8. You should have no trouble obtaining a single ‘dispenser’ containing a selection of each of these sizes for about £5.
Leger Weights
Leger weights are attached to the line to allow a bait to be presented on or near the bed of a river or lake. You will need a range of sizes to cover differences in river flow and the distance you need to cast.
There are many types of leger weight, but the most versatile and the only one you need to begin with is a pear shaped weight incorporating a swivel, known as the Arlesey Bomb. Obtain a selection of these in weights from .25 to 1 oz, (7 to 28 grams).
Swimfeeders
Swimfeeders are devices that take the place of leger weights and incorporate a means of getting free offerings of your hookbait or groundbait to the place where you are fishing.

Broadly speaking there are two types, those than are closed at both ends and are mostly used for delivering maggots to the swim and those that are open at both ends and are used to deliver a mix of groundbait (explained later) and maggots, pellets or other baits.
Swimfeeders are not essential to fishing, but if your budget will stretch to it, buy a few of both types in the medium sizes of about 1.5 to 2 inches (3.5 to 5 cm) in length.
