There are two types of nets used by Coarse Anglers; Landing Nets and Keep Nets.
Landing Net
A landing net should be regarded as a necessity as any fish over a few ounces in weight will be difficult to land without one.
There are many sizes and types of landing net, but when you are starting out, pretty much any landing net of about 24 inches (60cm) measured across the widest part will be suitable, with a handle of about 8 feet (2.5 metres).
Check the rules of the waters you intend to fish before buying a net, as some will insist that you have a landing net of at least a minimum size before you are allowed to fish for Carp or Pike. If you are intending to fish such waters, you will need to obtain two landing nets as the larger nets for Carp and Pike fishing are not suitable for general coarse fishing.

You can usually buy nets and handles together for £10 or less, and an alternative to the type with a removable handle is the ‘flip up’ type of net used by Game Anglers which are perfectly usable for coarse fishing, but make sure you get one with a long enough handle as many of these have short handles designed for use when wading and will not be suitable if you need to fish from a high bank above the water.
Keep Net
A keep net is used to retain fish in the water until you have finished fishing and is optional, only being required if you are intending to fish competitions, or want to be able to look at the fish you have caught at the end of a session. Many commercial fisheries do not allow the use of keep nets, and may restrict their use for larger fish such as carp.
If you do decide to buy a keep net, make sure it is at least 8 feet (2.5 metres) long and complies with the rules set by the Environment Agency and any waters you intend to fish.
