To cover a wide range of float fishing situations I suggest that you buy a general purpose float fishing rod of about 12 feet (3.6 metres) in length. If you are small of stature, or are buying equipment for a child, one of about 10 feet (3 meters) may be a better choice to start with as it will be more manageable.
There is a wide range of affordable float rods, and any rod of this length described as either a ‘Float Rod’ or ‘Match Rod’ in a price range between £20 and £30 should be suitable. Avoid telescopic rods and specialist rods designed for short range Carp Fishing, sometimes described as ‘Stalking Rods’ as these are not versatile enough to cover a wide range of fishing situations.
When considering the purchase of a float rod, take particular care to ensure that it is made of ‘Carbon’ or ‘Carbon Composite’ sometimes referred to just as ‘Composite’. These rods should be light enough to hold for long periods, whereas cheaper rods made of ‘Fibreglass’ or described as of ‘Glass’ construction will be heavier and are much harder to learn to fish with.
Tacklebargains.co.uk is a good place to look for discounted float rods at a range of prices. Currently they are selling Fladen Vantage full carbon match rods which normally retail for £45 at a 40% discount, bringing the price down to less than £30. You can find out more at the Tackle Bargains web site.
