Depending on how many reels and spools you buy, you can load your reels with a range of line strengths. Line choice depends on the conditions and the size and type of fish you expect to catch in a given situation, so carrying a selection is advisable.
If you only have two spools a line of 3lbs (1.4 kg) is suitable for a wide range of float fishing situations, and one of 5lbs (2.3 kg) is suitable for most legering situations.
If you have more than two spools, I would suggest you also load one with line of about 10lbs (4.5 kg) and another with line of 4lb (1.6 kg) or 6lb(2.7 kg) if you are mainly intending to use general fishing techniques to catch a range of fish, or 15lb ((6.8 kg) if you are intending to fish where there are very large specimens of Carp or Pike.

We will cover the different strengths of line used in different angling situations and how to load line on to a reel later in this guide.
There are many manufacturers of line, and the price can vary widely, but inexpensive line is fine to begin with and will usually be more forgiving in use than the more expensive specialist lines.
You will need 100 metres of line in each of the strengths that you choose to load your reels with and any line described as ‘monofilament’ or ‘nylon’ in strengths approximating those above will be fine.
