Ground bait is a term given to a soft paste or dough that you introduce into a swim to encourage fish to forage for food. Ground bait is made by mixing very fine particles of cereal and other materials with water to produce a dough that will break up in the water.
Sometimes ground bait is used to form a cloud of particles in the water, and sometimes it is designed to form an artificial bed over which fish will feed.
When fishing at range samples of your hook bait can be added to groundbait to allow it to be thrown into the swim or introduced in an open ended swimfeeder.

Commercial Ground Baits
A wide range of commercial groundbaits are available from fishing tackle shops. Different types of groundbait will behave differently when introduced to the swim and you should study the instructions on the packet or seek advice to determine which will be suitable for the waters you intend to fish.
Ground Bait Additives
A wide range of powdered and liquid groundbait additives are available to colour and flavour groundbait. You can also mix different types of groundbait to make your own preferred mix.
Making your own Ground Baits
You can make your own groundbait using bread.
A good groundbait can be made by liquidising a few slices of bread. As bread in this form is quite moist it is not necessary to mix it with water as it can easily be formed into balls to throw into the swim.
Liquidised bread is a good bait where Roach or Chub are the intended quarry, but when Roach fishing take care not to introduce too much to the swim as it can be very filling.
You can also make a very effective groundbait by drying slices of old, but not stale, white or brown bread in the oven and using a liquidiser to break it into very fine particles.
This can then be mixed with water and introduced in balls into the swim. Use less water if you want the groundbait to break up quickly and form a cloud, more water if you want the groundbait to break up on the bottom.
